Information Update from City of Chilliwack

By City of Chilliwack 06/04/2020, 10:30am PDT

Good morning,

We have some exciting news!

Since the provincial government moved into Phase Two of the COVID-19 guidelines the City of Chilliwack has been working diligently behind the scenes collaborating with a number of organizations and municipalities to establish a way we can move forward and in a manner that hold the safety of our clients and staff as the top priority. Initially local governments closed all our outdoor and indoor facilities as a way to support Dr. Bonnie Henry’s direction and the Provincial edicts which had placed, and still has, the province under emergency order.

With the moving into Phase Two we have strategically started to open some of our outdoor facilities starting with skateboard parks, courts and we are now able to inform you that effective June 11, 2020 users will be able to book our grass facilities. This date will allow our Parks division, the required, five working days to groom the fields so that they are ready for bookings. We do ask until that date all users (organized or not) remain off the fields to ensure no damage is done.

All regular users will be given priority in the bookings however in order to be able to allow others access we ask that the regular users contact our office via email prior to 9:00am Monday June 8, 2020 informing us of your commitment to play. After that the City will begin booking the facility on a first-come-first served basis.

The City of Chilliwack will not be monitoring execution of play in regards to the COVID-19 provincial guidelines and suggest that if you are looking for safe ways to implement your activities you contact your Provincial Sport Organization, other sport sanctioning bodies or any of the following resources:

WorkSafe BC
Fraser Health Authority

We must be reminded that these actions do not mean we are moving back to the “normal” as we knew it. There is still a serious health threat out there and these actions are put in place to help establish a “new normal”. At any time plans may need to change.

In times such as these being able to recreate and not have the means to do so created a challenge we did not anticipate. We can not thank you enough for your patience, respect and responsible acts as we worked through this.

If you have any questions in regards to this communique please do not hesitate to contact me via an email reply or by contacting the Recreation and Culture Department at 604-793-2904. To confirm your intent to play or to book please contact any of the following:

Information Update from City of Chilliwack

By City of Chilliwack 06/01/2020, 2:30pm PDT

Good afternoon to all,

I just wanted to take a moment, and on behalf of the Recreation and Culture department, to inform all of our user groups as to where we are sitting in regards to re-opening our facilities and establishing a “new norm” in their use.

The City of Chilliwack is in constant communication with an number of entities as well as working collaborative with other municipalities to establish a plan as to how to effectively re open to ensure that the safety of the patron and staff is paramount. Behind the scenes the landscape has been changing and we are trying to stay on top of those changes. Each facility has it’s own considerations and therefore our plan needs to be methodical and strategic so as to not have to close up again. Outdoor facility considerations do not translate directly to indoor facilities for example different cleaning protocols need to be put in place and based on Worksafe BC guidelines.

Although Recreation and Culture are in some form of communication with ViaSport and the BCRPA we will not be approving any user groups “return to play” plan and will be leaving that up to each particular group.

Please be assured that we are taking this very seriously as we would love to have everyone back recreating knowing it is one of the best ways to help us get through the pandemic. We ask you for your patience and just know we want this to happen as soon as possible.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact myself or you can contact Ryan Mulligan at . For frequent updates please feel free to check out the City of Chilliwack’s website as our communications team is working diligently to keep the site updated with all relevant COVID-19 related information.

In the meantime stay safe.

Cancellation of 2020 Season

By dougt 05/28/2020, 1:00pm PDT

As I am sure you are all aware by now, the Jolly Miller 2020 season has been cancelled. This decision was not one taken lightly by our Executive Group and we worked up until the end with all governing bodies to try to make some semblance of a season a go. At the end of the day, with so much uncertainty on a day to day basis, there was just no way to definitively identify an opening date.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding through this time. Many people have reached out to me personally with reassurance that at the end of the day the final decision was the right one and I thank you for that. I also thank the executive group for all of their input and suggestions while we were bouncing ideas around.

See you all for the 2021 Jolly Miller Season.

Thank you,

Doug Thompson
